DAY 5: 02.11.25 – OAXACA – HIERVE EL AGUA WATERFALLS – MEZCAL TASTING – OAXACA (approximately 5 hours)
Hierva el agua – frozen stone waterfalls, one of the most interesting natural landmarks in Oaxaca.
The waterfall, which reaches 90 meters in height, is truly an impressive sight.
The frozen waterfall formed as mineral-rich water emerged through karst limestone. Passing through a natural filter, warm underground waters flowed down the mountain slope, with minerals deposited on the surface over thousands of years, gradually creating the appearance of a frozen water flow. The color of the mineral deposits on the surface of the mountain is white, while the water in the two mineral pools formed on the slope is yellow due to a high level of calcium carbonate, magnesium, and sulfur.
The formation process is similar to that of stalactites, except that in this case, the water flowed outward instead of inward.
Yerba el Agua consists of two waterfalls. One, 30 meters tall and 60 meters wide, is called Cascada Chica or “small waterfall.” The other, Cascada Grande or “big waterfall,” is even larger.
